I am a fourth generation New Zealander and most importantly, a third generation Hamiltonian. Approximately one year ago, I completed my Master’s thesis at the University of Waikato. I examined the way in which social welfare policy is communicated to people from low socio-economic communities and how a lack of communication leads to a lack of access and ultimately, impacts on a whole family’s well being and quality of life.
While studying, I was elected President of the Waikato University Student Union (WSU), an organisation which is responsible for providing social and advocacy services, as well as representation for approximately 11,000 students. I was re-elected the following year and also increased the number of students voting in the election.
In 2007 I put my name forward as a candidate for the Hamilton City Council, standing for the East Ward. This campaign gave me extensive experience in campaigning at grass roots level.
I am currently employed at Te W_nanga o Aotearoa as a Degree Learning Advisor and I am relishing the opportunities afforded me in this environment. In my role, I come into contact with many people from diverse sections of the population which gives me many opportunities to communicate ideas and create dialogue.
Our campaign wants to hear your stories, and we are going to make it easy for you to communicate them to us. Please get in touch, look out for our events, and post feedback on the issues that are important to you. I look forward to getting to know you through this campaign and meeting with you soon.
