I was brought up in the coal mining town of Rünanga on the West Coast of the South Island by his Grandparents. I’m probably the only one in Parliament who knows what it is like to live on the old age pension! The closure of the coal mines and the rapid downturn of the local economy ensured that I, like many other young people in the area, left to find work.
I was inspired to join the New Zealand Labour Party in 1973 by Norman Kirks vision for New Zealand of an independent country, particularly by Kirk’s strong stand against French Nuclear testing, the recognition of China, his unflagging opposition to the War in Vietnam and the social conscience for an inclusive and supportive society.
I worked in the hospitality, agriculture, driving and construction industries before I joined the union movement. I relished the opportunity to advocate against low pay and for better working conditions.
I have three children Richard, Oliver and Kate. I have a strong commitment to my family and enjoy spending time with my friends, riding my motorbike and reading and the occasional game for the Parliamentary Rugby team.
I undertake community work including being an active patron for the Youth to Men Trust which work with young men to turn their lives around to one of opportunity and achievement. I also assists the Trustees of the Te Aranga Marae in Flaxmere, Hastings.
Elected to Parliament in 1993, I have held numerous positions including Junior Whip, Senior Government Whip, Assistant Speaker and Cabinet Minister. I’m currently a Labour list MP, Senior Whip and Opposition Spokesperson on Courts and Veterans’ Affairs.
