Kia Ora, I’m Nanaia Mahuta your local MP for Hauraki-Waikato. I have grown up for most of my life in the Waikato region and have always had a strong connection to my hometowns of Huntly and Ngaruawahia. My greatest achievement is being a mum and seeing all sorts of things through new eyes has helped me to remain focus on the things that really matter. I want a safe, healthy, sustainable and happy environment to raise my child and for all children. I want to serve the people and communities of our region so that everyone gets a fair go, can earn a decent wage, put kai on the table, be confident and proud no matter where they are in the world. Everyone deserves to be the best they can be!
Our Natural Environment and Cultural Heritage
We have a special electorate with unique geographical characteristics. The Waikato river, our ancestral mountain Taupiri, the wild West Coast Harbours, Raglan surf, Lake Karapiro, the first inland pest free island – Maungatautari, Mt Te Aroha, the Hauraki Gulf and the vast expanse of conservation estate in Hauraki and the bountiful food basket of Tikapa moana (Firth of Thames) reaching into the water rich ranges of Hunua are some of what we have to boast.
I am keen to continue to preserve the natural heritage in our region, support the clean-up of our waterways and better water management regimes, safe and efficient pest control to ensure out region is a great place to raise our children. We also have several marae, hapuu and iwi who contribute to our cultural identity within the Tainui waka.
Our Economy and Our People
Then there are the many coastal towns, Papakura and Hamilton cities, the many gardens in the Franklin district and sleepy villages scattered throughout. We also make a strong economic contribution through the agricultural sector, thermal-power generation in Huntly (the place I call home) as well as a coal-rich resource in the region. All this and many communities made up of people who want to make a go of it by working together, smarter and for each other.
There is a real challenge in our communities to grow more jobs and invest in better skills training for our whanau. Too many people are leaving for Australia because they see it as a better place to be than here – I want them to have the same opportunities here. I know that iwi are starting to play a greater role in economic development and to achieve the greatest benefits it will require working with others and most importantly creating better opportunities for our own people.
Our Future
Hauraki-Waikato is a young electorate which deserves our attention and investment. At their best our rangatahi are creative, passionate, talented and diverse individuals many of whom are culturally confident. But there are also challenges which are not of their making. Our society is becoming more unequal, many of our children live in benefit dependent households and although others won’t talk about it, poverty does exist.
I believe that all our children deserve the best start in life - a happy, healthy, warm home is fundamental. But the real investment is to ensure all our children are educated, resilient problem-solvers, confident in who they are and where they come from. I believe that it takes a community to raise a child, but it also takes a loving whanau. We are continually seeking to improve their quality of life and I am committed to that goal. I want to work alongside the community to put those aspirations at the front of government decision-making.
I am proud to be a member of the Labour team and I will seeking your support to continue to be the MP for Hauraki-Waikato. Your Support has made all the Difference. Thank You.
