Kia ora, my name is Louis Te Kani. I was born and raised in Tauranga and live in Rotorua with my partner Hiria who is of Tuhoe descent. We have 2 boys, Ibrahim and Atamatea. Ibrahim is in his 4th year at Auckland School of Medicine studying to be a Doctor, Atamatea is aged 6 and currently at Te Wharekura O Te Koutu.

I work as a lawyer practicing in the Criminal, Family and Maori Land Courts. I am also a Youth Advocate appointed by the Court to represent young people who appear in the Youth Courts. I am a member of a number of Maori trusts and represent a number of trusts in my employment as a lawyer. I began my legal career in the Eastern Bay of Plenty and then spent 2 years with the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission, and the last 6 years as a lawyer in Rotorua.

What I believe in

I believe in the potential of Maori to lift ourselves up and walk tall towards a brighter future economically and socially.

I believe that a Labour government can achieve that and bring about economic prosperity and ensure Maori take their place as the powerhouse of the New Zealand economy.

I believe that education is a key to lifting Maori potential towards a more prosperous future.
