Top 5 Issues

  1. We need to make sure that Hillside Workshop gets to built the rest of the new rolling stock needed by KiwiRail. This will provide much needed jobs and training opportunities for people in South Dunedin and will have flow on effects for all South Dunedin businesses
  2. People urgently need a livable wage. Too many people are earning less than they need to pay the bills. The Alliance would raise the minimum wage to $17 an hour. We would also restore benefits to a livable level.
  3. GST is an unfair tax on low and middle incomes that forces up the price of essential items like food and electricity making them unaffordable for many people. The Alliance would remove GST immediately on all food and eventually get rid of it altogether. We would replace it with a very small financial transactions tax that would have its greatest affect on the very wealthy who speculate on shares and our currency and make conditions difficult for our small and medium sized businesses.
  4. State assets must stay in state hands. If we sell off our essential assets we will end up paying far too much for essential services like electricity. The Alliance would bring the whole of the electricity network back under government ownership and make sure power prices are kept affordable for everyone.
  5. Healthcare and education should be free for everyone. The Alliance would make sure that this happens. We would get rid of school fees/ donations and wipe student loans.
