I am the oldest son of a church Minister who engrained in me (from a very young age) the importance and values of social justice and fairness for all. Much of my childhood years involved working alongside my parents, serving others in the community and supporting people facing hardship and other challenges. I spent the majority of my childhood in Manurewa before moving to the North Shore. I have since moved back to South Auckland, and am currently residing in Papakura. Together my wife, Julie, and I have three young children. I want them to grow up in New Zealand, where everyone has an opportunity to get ahead.
Naturally, following on from the early seeds planted in my upbringing, my working life has been centered on advocacy. Employed as a union organiser and participating actively with numerous community organisations, I have worked with people from all walks of life, with an overall focus on creating positive change in New Zealand.
Similar to the values I believe in, the Labour Party has embraced the diversity of Aotearoa, promoting an egalitarian society where we look after our most vulnerable. The commitment of Labour to strengthening the economy, supporting our families and funding the very best education for our children, with an emphasis on a providing a strong foundation for all, continue to be at the forefront of policy development. In addition, support for our older New Zealanders, an ongoing relationship with the Maori incorporating principles of partnership, participation and protection, and valuing the contribution of Pasifika, Asian, and all other peoples who now call New Zealand home continues to be upheld.
Papakura is a young and vibrant community, and has many strengths and great potential for further development. With the right support from central government, we can do much more to progress this community, building and strengthening our economy. There are a number of areas to be focused upon, however three priority areas have been identified, these include: Ensuring a strong educational foundation for our Children and earning or learning opportunities and careers for our Youth; Improving peoples circumstances with a specific focus on addressing and supporting individuals and families with the rising cost of living; and addressing unemployment, growing our economy through higher incomes and creating more jobs.
I have been given the opportunity to serve the people of Papakura as the Labour Party candidate, not only a privilege but also a great responsibility I take seriously. I am committed to connecting with our Papakura community, which has ranged from engaging with local social service groups and businesses, to even putting on a jersey for the mighty Papakura Sea Eagles.
I am proud to be Labour because we are committed to this country, with a real plan to help the many not the few. With strong leadership from Phil Goff and a team that is ready to work hard for all Kiwis, to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of our children and future generations.
