Barry Tumai is of Waikato descent, he is also a proud father as well as a Grand-father of 2 beautiful Grand-daughters, born and raised in South Auckland he attended  schools throughout Mangere , including Mangere Central, Mangere Intermediate, and Mangere College

He is from a hard working class background with solid work ethics. Barry is a very confident rugby league player, he is currently playing for the Manukau Magpies Masters rugby league club .

He operates from a grass roots level focusing on Rangatahi and Kuia/kaumatua and has proud tribal and community links

He has coached and mentored in various sporting codes such as rugby league ,touch, and Waka Ama

He currently runs a waka ama programme aimed at Rangatahi from various schools as far as Wesley College.

His involvement in Waka Ama spans over 24 years.

He is also involved in the quest to erect new clubrooms on the Manukau Harbour at Mangere Bridge.

Barry has Also served on the Manukau City Council Treaty of Waitangi team.
